Which Diet Is Best?

With a wide range of diets out there, it is hard to know which diet is best.  Today we are going to look at the most popular ones

5:2 Diet
Commonly known as the intermittent fasting diet, the 5:2 diet requires you to fast for 2 days and eat ‘normally’ for 5 days.  The 2 fasting days are supposed to be less than 500 calories.  This diet is not suitable for everyone as the fasting can make people feel dizzy and faint, and the 5 ‘normal’ days are meant to be eating healthily as opposed to your normal eating pattern.

Meal replacement diets
A range of shakes and soups are eaten instead of food.  The shakes are expensive and you are unable to stay on the diet for ever, so as soon as you return to your normal eating the weight comes back on.  The limited calorie intake also reduces your metabolic rate, slowing down weight loss.

Atkins
A high protein and low carbohydrate diet.  The diet however, does not help you decide which fats to eat, causing people to eat foods that are high in saturated fat, rather than a balanced mix.  Vegetables and fruit are also limited, making you miss out on vital minerals and vitamins that your body needs to function properly

Paleo
The caveman diet, where you eat foods that the cavemen would have eaten - meat, veg, fruit etc.  No wholegrain carbs are allowed nor dairy, which means you will once again miss key nutrients that your body requires.  It is also expensive and not suitable for vegetarians.

Weight watchers
A point based system where you are allowed so many points a day, and foods are given points depending on their calorie content.  At least no food groups are banned, however it would be easy to miss out on vital nutrients as there are no rules on what you have to eat.

Slimmers World
A very low fat diet. Plenty of veg and fruit.  There is no limit on what you can eat - so you can still over eat and gain weight and essential nutrients from healthy fats are missed, leaving your body depleted


So which diet is best?  None.  Dieting itself may be seen as a quick way to lose weight and easy to follow, but it has numerous flaws

Missing key nutrients
Most of the diets ban certain food groups, which will cause you to miss out on key nutrients, vitamins and minerals which your body needs to work optimally, avoid illness and be healthy

Lacks education
Nearly all the diets lack education on what makes a healthy diet and what you should be eating.  Therefore you are not learning what you should be eating to remain healthy

Gain weight
You may very well lose weight on the diets, but how sustainable are they?  At some stage you will come off them, and return to your normal eating habits, gaining weight, and research has shown that we gain more weight that we originally started with, due to over eating foods we have been deprived off.
